Notice to the Press
September 7, 1999 


Release of the 1999 Annual Report on International Religious Freedom
The Department of State will submit to the Congress on September 8, 1999,
the first-ever "Annual Report on International Religious Freedom." 

There will be an ON-THE-RECORD briefing on the report in the State
Department Press Briefing Room (Room 2118) on September 9, at 12:00 p.m.
by Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom Robert Seiple
and Assistant Secretary for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor Harold
Hongju Koh. 

Executive Summary and Selected Countries 

Based on input from the State Department Correspondents' Association, the
Press Office will provide a limited number of copies of the Introduction,
Executive Summary, and 19 selected country reports. 

Available at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 9, on a first-come,
first-served basis; 
Only one set per media organization; 
Must be picked up in person at the Press Office, Room 2115; 
They will not be faxed or mailed; 
Couriers sent to obtain a copy must have media identification to be
admitted into the building. Copies will not be delivered to couriers at
building entrances; 
EMBARGOED until the conclusion of the Department's ON-THE-RECORD briefing
Full Report 

The Office of Press Relations will make available two pre-publication
reference copies of the full report for members of the press to review:
one in the Press Office (Room 2109) and one in the Correspondents' Room
(Room 2313). Journalists may photocopy selected individual country reports
from these reference copies. EMBARGOED until the conclusion of the
ON-THE-RECORD briefing. 

Electronic Access 

After the conclusion of the briefing on September 9, the Bureau of Public
Affairs will place the full text of the report on the State Department's
Internet web site. 

Book Form 

A few weeks after its release, printed copies of the full report will be
sold by the Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office,
